Technology Evangelists
The purpose of this study was to gain a clearer understanding of the relatively new phenomenon originating in Silicon Valley, known as the “technology evangelist.” Our study included surveying and interviewing 29 technical evangelists worldwide from a variety of cultures and organizations such as Microsoft, Oracle, Google, Adobe, PayPal, Amazon, Sun Microsystems and Yahoo.
Some general tendencies regarding the role emerged. However, we also discovered variable character, or personality, patterns among participants. Then, we created a grid to analyze their leadership qualities.
This paper includes our recommendations for recruiting, integrating, developing and managing technology evangelists. It provides insights into what motivates evangelists and what makes them tick.
